Mimi's Mini Ayurvedic Treatment

So today we went mini hair shopping, got some great stuff by the way. Carolyn needed to go to Walgreen's & Target to find the Shea Moisture Curling Souffle, and I needed to go to our local Indian grocery store to get a couple of Ayurvedic powders. I ended up buying the Hesh Neem (2.89) & Shikakai Powder (2.99); all totaling 5.86 (I think). After driving for an hour trying to find a store that was still in stock of the curling souffle, finally finding it at the Target that we always buy hair products from and should have went to in the 1st place :(,  I bough some plain yogurt there to mix in with the powders [ and winter edition Oreos ;) ].

Since this was 1st attempt of trying the mixture, I kept the ingredients to a minimum. Wish I had taken a pic of the treatment.

 1. 2 teaspoons of the plain yogurt

2. Added warm water didn't measure but probably 3 big teaspoons. ( or whatever you feel that's needed.)

3. 2 teaspoons of the Hesh Neem Powder. 2 teaspoons of Hesh Shikakai Powder.

4. Mixed it all in a plastic bowl with a plastic spoon and let it sat for 5 minutes.

5. Massaged the mixture in my hair and covered with a plastic cap.

6. Kept it on for 15 minutes, got in the shower, and co-wash with Herbal Essences Hello Hydration conditioner and Suave Rosemary Mint conditioner.

The results....

I will defiantly do this treatment again, but I'll add some oils or something to cover that yogurt smell because it made me nauseous. Anyway, my hair was soft and shiny, and my curls were looser with the help of the henna from Sunday (Godrej). My hair is dry right now and it still fills good. Oh, and dandruff is taking care of, too. Again, this stuff was GREAT! :D

Here's the powders description.
Neem - "The Trusted Antibacterial & Anti Dandruff Powder"- Powerful natural Antiseptic, Cures skin disorders, Controls Natural oil balance of skin, Clears dandruff. ( I'll try it in my facial clay mask).

Shikakai - " Dirt Buster For Your Scalp"- Provides new life to hair strands, Strengthens hair roots, Clears Dandruff, Keeps the scalp and cool ( Does what it says).

My First Henna Treatment

Today I decided to henna my hair since my bantu knot out didn't last as long. Marilyn had previously henna the day before and had more than a half left over so I decided why not try it.

The henna we used was the Godrej Henna that Mimi mixed with coffee, Herbal Essences Hello Hydration, Tea Tree oil, & Castor oil. After mixing all the ingredients together with hot water, she put it in the fridge overnight. So for me it's been sitting in the fridge for two days. I was kind of skeptic about it changing my hair any. You know what, it did do something.

Before

After

I don't know if you can see the color change, but my hair is actually like a mocha brown or darker. I don't know if it loosened my curls any, but my hair is shiny from the henna and suave conditioner. I actually trimmed and twisted my hair after. So I'll be defiantly doing this again, and I'm happy with the results. For more info on henna, you can check out http://www.curlynikki.com/search/label/Henna on Curly Nikki.

My Wash Routine & First Bantu Knot-Out

Thursday I wanted to try something different with my hair besides twist outs, and since it was wash time and didn't have to go to school, I decided try a bantu knot-out. Marilyn's been doing them and I wanted to see if I would get the same results, and I thought this will be a good time to try out my Miss Jessie's Curly Pudding.

Products being used:
Shampoo: Garnier Fructis Triple Nutrition
DC mixture: Shea Moisture Yucca & Baobab Deep Treatment Masque, Herbal Essences Hello Hydration, EVCO & Peppermint oil mix, EVOO, Kinky-Curly Knot Today(KKNT), Suave Rosemary Mint conditioner
Detangling Conditioner: KKNT
Styler: Miss Jessie's Curly Pudding

Wash Routine:
1. I use Kinky-Curly Knot Today on dry hair to detangle. As I'm detangling, I'm twisting my hair using Naptural85's method. (click link to see method)
2. After detangling and twisting, I get in the shower and wash my hair with the twist in. By washing my hair this way, it stays detangled and I don't have to worry about it knotting up as it's shrinking.
3. After shampooing, I put deep conditioner on. I have 2 ways of doing this that depends on how much free time I have. I leave the DC in b/w 30-45 mins.
    A. For in a Rush: I just put DC on the twists w/o taking them down.
    B. No Rush: I take down twist one at a time and put DC on and retwist. (This time not doing Naptural85's method) I will do this while in the shower.
4. Once through DC'ing, I rinse it out. Depending on if I did A, I will retwist hair using Naptural85's method. B, I will leave in.
5. Then I let my hair air-dry.

Now, since I was styling my hair in a BKO, I took the twists down. I took medium sized sections and combed through, applying a dime sized amount of Curly Pudding on hair. I retwisted my hair and did the knots. I tried doing Naptural85's BKO, but my knot wouldn't stay twisting it that way. Have to wait for my hair to get longer.

Afterwards, I Let it air dry overnight, but some of the twists weren't completely dry. Luckily, i didn't have to go anywhere so I left them in on Friday. Then today I had to take them  down since I was going out today. I used my mixture of EVCO and peppermint oil to help take it down and separate , and here are the results:

So I like it, but I don't think I'll be doing too many of these just because I don't have the time. Then, I'm more of a twist out girl. The Curly Pudding did pretty good, my hair is a tad bit crunchy, but that's OK since it's suppose to have hold, so I'll be using it more often. It did give me some shine too and it has a strong scent, but after a while I got used to it. So this was an experiment gone right, but I'll stick with a twist out for a while.

9 Months Today

OK, so it's been A While since we last posted, but school has been extremely busy. Anyway, today is my 9 Month Natural Anniversary! Since my BC, my hair has grown a lot and people are getting adjusted to our hair. They are now trying to adjust to our constant style changes which change with the weather. Here are a couple of pics from my 8th month.

Here are a couple of comparisons

I Miss My Hair!

Since I've had my kinky-twists, I've been REALLY missing my hair. I miss washing, styling, and even detangling it! Now you know you definitely miss it if you miss detangling it. I know I have to keep my hair in kinky-twists for close to two months, but UGH! I'll hold out until the first week of November, but after that, the twists are out. These two weeks will be up before we know it.

By the way..... Here is a pic of us at Mississippi State University.

It's Been A While

So I know it's been a while, and I'm so sorry, but we have been SUPER  busy. I'd contemplated even typing this. School has been hectic, but good, and things are starting to slow down. Our classes are no joke; we get homework almost everyday(weekends too), so with all this going on, we decided to get kinky twists, to give our hair a break. Well so far only me, Marilyn getting her's done tomorrow. During this time, I'll be researching products to moisturize my hair, because my hair has breaking badly due to lack of moisture. If I can I'll try to post a pic tomorrow, but for now, until I'm free, there won't be as many posts, but I'll try, I have reviews and videos, but I've been busy and lazy. BTW, I'm SIX months natural today, six more to go!

Coming of Junior Year

So the time has come again, school. This year not only will we be juniors, but in 2 days I'll be 5 months natural on the first B day of school. It's pretty good starting the new school year natural because all we are wearing is a wash n go. There is going to be a lot of changes this year(good of course with God's help),with one of being Marilyn getting a job. When she had on her uniform, I couldn't stop laughing at her. It's not that I was laughing at how she looked, but I couldn't believe she had her first job.

Mimi in her Papa John's uniform.

Yesterday, we went to meet our teachers and I had to sell yearbooks for the yearbook staff. Luckily for me, the teacher didn't kicked me off for not selling my required ads, but instead is relying on me to come up with this grunge look for photos this year, since she says I'm creative. Both Mimi and I are happy with our schedules(had to get mine switched around), and have three classes together this year.

Earlier this week, we took some pictures with my camera, and they turned out good. We got a lot of compliments on them, but the hair style we had; we just couldn't keep it up so that's why tomorrow we are wearing an old wash n go.
So I'll come back tomorrow on how the first day of school went or wait until Friday to recall the week. It depends.

Sweeping Curlies

Carolyn:So today is clean up Friday, and it's my job to clean our bedroom. I start sweeping and when I was done, this was in the pile.

This has become an every Friday thing, constantly sweeping curlies. Luckily, our hair is braided( have to put up pics later) so next Friday we won't be seeing THIS. The bathroom isn't even this bad, but we'll see how bad it gets two Fridays from now.

Thought for Today

Step out your boundary and try something new; it's OK to switch things up every once in a while. If you are used to being to yourself, try going to a friend's party, seminar of your interest( I'll be going to my first seminar on digital photography today!), or any other social event to get you out there. If you're bored, try a new sport or get that guitar that you've been thinking about and wanted to play, or try the new restaurant down the street that everyone's talking about. In all, just be open to new possibilities and not do the same routine you've been doing for 5 years now. You'll never know, you might be happy you tried it.

Summer Vacation So Far

So today is the first day of July and I can't really say I'm having a good vacation. It's not bad but it's not great either. The first month of my vacation was spent staying home and selling yearbook ads which are almost impossible to sell. So the ads have definitely ruined my mood but I prayed about it and got my first sale and some possible sales; I have to call back with them to make sure, but I'm trying and getting somewhere. So I'm praying July goes MUCH better than June and that I sell these ads. July the 4th is coming up and on that day not only will I celebrate Independence Day, but I will also celebrate National Afro Day, and I will be definitely be rocking my fro. So that day I'm looking forward to, but after that it's back to work with ad sales. It's like I'm doing school work during summer, but I have to do it or else I won't be on the yearbook staff which is adding more stress to me. Not a good thing, because I don't handle stress well nowadays, but I'm trying to get better.

I do have one trip I'm really looking forward to which is going to Florida, but after it's time to get ready for school. I have to admit that this summer vacation is going by fast, which leaves me wondering will my junior year go by quick. At least my hair is one of my least concern. Wait I take that back, because I might wear a twist out. But until school starts, July will mostly be work with a week off for a trip. Wonder how my summer vacation for senior year will be?

Comparison: Big Chop & 3 months

Here are pictures from my BC to 3 months & 2 weeks.
BC: My hair was really short & it was blown out.

2 Months: I could definitely tell my hair was growing. This was a twist out that I picked out.

3 months & 2 weeks: My hair is getting longer! :-D  This was an old twist out that I fluffed out.

As you can see my hair is ACTUALLY growing. Back when I had a relaxer, my hair never grew this quick. I'm really happy and can't wait for my one year natural anniversary.

Just Talk

Hi, it's been so long since we last posted. I thought Mimi was going to do something, but she's been super lazy about the blog. I have a legit excuse, which was me trying to sell yearbook ads(so far none has bought from me, and I don't know why it's mandatory). So since I've been busy with that, I've been feeling down and stopped working out, so I know I picked up a few pounds. Surprisingly, I haven't neglected my hair as much. I still wash & DC once a week, twist my hair, and untwist the next day. After the 2nd day, I picked my twist out, since it was raining for three days straight(I didn't mind). This yearbook staff stuff is really messing up my routine though, I need to relax and get back into shape. Lately, I've been praying about it, so I have to wait and see how this will turn out. Later I'll post a pic of my hair and compare it my BC. I'm so happy now that my hair is growing, by the way, I'm 3 months and 2 weeks, and it's getting longer. Well that's all for now.

Ooo, I almost forgot....

Recap of our trip to Dallas

Well Saturday, my mom, siblings, grandparents, and I left for Dallas over the weekend to see my youngest aunt preach her first sermon. First of all, our mom made us drive half the way there to get some more experience before we got our intermediate license that we were suppose to get earlier, but that's another funny story. Anyway, we get to Dallas, but before we got to our hotel, we went to the wrong hotel twice, but that's A LONG story. We get to the hotel finally, check into our rooms, and meet all our aunts but one. Luckily for us, they all liked our hair a lot. We have two cousins who are natural, but straighten their hair, and the oldest liked our hair and ended up falling in love with our Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie even though she uses it for wrapping her hair, but that's OK.

Later, we go to Black Eyed Pea to eat, and surprise, the 5th aunt comes in. She's actually the 4th, but I just said 5th since she was the last to show. She saw our hair and liked it; she even played in my hair while walking to her chair. We got through with dinner(had a lot of laughs and camera wars with Marilyn) and headed to Walgreen's  While their we showed our cousin what product we used, so now their's another Shea Moisture fan. By the way, we wore twist outs the whole weekend. Back at the hotel, we watched the trains pass by every 30 minutes and watched people pull into Arby's at 12 something in the morning. I know we were sort of bored, but we had fun and watched our cousin straighten her sister's hair. Later, we were off to sleep, ready to get up early in the morning.

Sunday morning, we got dressed and ready to head to church and home. Knowing Marilyn and I, we got a stash of headbands, and we chose our biggest headbands. We get to the church, which was actually at a student union at a college. We go inside and guess what we see...... So many women with natural hair and at least 5 guys with dreads. Even the Preacher's wife was natural, and there was this lady with real long dreads who liked our hair. During greeting time, all of the women who were natural, came up to us hugging us and saying how much they liked our hair, which was a huge boost in our confidence( not like we didn't have any problems). Then, we stayed for aunt's sermon which went very well. Later, we went out to eat, and met another natural who was asking Marilyn how we styled our hair. Now we get that a lot often, it's so weird telling a woman older than me how or what we used to style our hair. After that, we went back home and went straight to sleep, since we had to get our intermediate license the next day. We did get it and went driving right after. :-D

Here are a few pics:
